The Beginning...

My Essay on C.S. Lewis and J.R.R Tolkien - For my writing class I choose two people to compare and contrast...these men immediately came to mind. It is amazing to think of such totally different men being such close friends because they had one goal in mind : To take the world of fiction to a higher level.

C.S. Lewis was the world renowned author of The Chronicles of Narnia books, and he was also good friends with J.R.R. Tolkien, author of Lord of the Rings. What were they both like? Did they share the same interests and goals? What did they plan to accomplish by writing their fantasy stories? Perhaps they had different plans for how to change the world, or perhaps they had different ideas in their minds for who would read their books. Of course we will never know their real ideas and why they spent endless hours on their books but maybe here you will be able to find out how they were to some degree.

C.S. Lewis was a carefree and natural person. Even when he was a boy he enjoyed romping in the garden and walking along the brook. He loved nature and wanted to be as close as he could to it. It was hard to tell what he was thinking because he sometimes lived in a dream... a dream perhaps about his imaginary world Narnia. He might have imagined that he was a great king living Narnia where the beasts talked and good always won over evil. He was kind and likable. He once said, "You are never too old to set another goal or to dream a new dream." Such a life he led! He let his imagination run away with him while he sat quietly at his desk. Six years later in 1950 he produced the first book in one of the most well known series The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. It was his books that helped inspire other authors to explore the world of fantasy. However, Lewis's books weren't the only thing that inspired further exploration into the world of fiction. There was a great work yet to come.

J.R.R. Tolkien also began writing his book, The Lord of the Rings trilogy in 1937. He began writing it after he finished The Hobbit and he had originally started LOTR as something small but it has gained fame throughout the years and is his most famous work. No one had created such vivid fantasy storied as he did. He had a mind for life-like imagination. Some people considered him insane because of his unnatural antics and crazed determination. He spent endless hours during the day at his desk to complete his stories. He was determined in everything he did and was always thorough  which explains the great thought he put into creating Middle Earth. He was however slow in his writing because he wanted to down on paper only the very beast and his pen was not fast enough for his imagination which is why he didn't finish until 1954.

Even though they were both totally different in their views of the fantasy world they were best friends and together they changed the world of writing for generations toe come. As Tolkien always said, "It's the job never started that takes the longest to finish."
